Week 34 - Impossible Dreams 15

Episode 3

Lucy runs into the den.  "What's going on?" she asks.  "What was all that screaming!"  Powell points to the fire, where the comic books have burned almost beyond recognition.  Lucy gasps.  "Daddy!  Your collection!"

Lamont shakes his head.  "Idiotic nonsense!" he mumbles.  He steps over to the coffee table and picks up the framed photo of his wife.  "I'm going up to rest now," he says and he slowly leaves.

Lucy and Powell stare at each other.  "He worked his whole life collecting those comic books," she says.  "They were his prize possessions!  They meant more to him than anything."

"Some of those were... they were irreplaceable.  Stuff from the 30's, stuff with... stuff where there's only a couple of copies that exist in the whole world."

"You better follow him...  If he could...  if he could do that, who knows what he's capable of..."

Powell nods and steps into the hallway.  He walks up the staircase and stops in front of a closed bedroom door.  He softly knocks.  "Mr. Lamont?" he calls.  "Mr. Lamont?  Are you in there?"  There is no answer.  After a few moments, he turns the knob and steps into the room.

Donald Lamont sits on a bed, staring at the photo of his wife.  Powell silently sits down next to him.

"Have you made any progress finding my Talisman?" Lamont asks, quietly.

Powell shakes his head.

Lamont sighs.  "Everything was so much simpler when I was wearing it.  I knew what was right and what was wrong.  I always knew what I was supposed to do next...  Now...  Now I'm not sure of anything."

"You...  you just need to rest sir..."

Lamont looks at the photo.  "She's dead, you know..." he whispers.  Powell stares at him.  "I didn't mean for that to happen...  It was an accident...  She had been seeing my brother."  He lets the photo drop to the bed.  "She was cheating on me with my own brother!  Why would she do that?  That bastard always wanted everything I had!  He tried to steal the company...  And he stole...  He stole Loretta!  It was...  He tricked her, somehow, he lied to her, I'm sure of it...  And I...  I was so mad...  I knew they were together...  I waited outside his house for them to come back and...  when I saw his car...  I was so angry...  I jumped in front of it...  I don't know what I thought would happen.  I wasn't thinking...  I was so angry!  But...  Michael tried to swerve away from me and he hit...  he hit another car coming in the other direction...  They both died...  I killed her..."  His eyes fill with tears and he looks at Powell.  "I killed her, I killed her..."
