Week 27 - Impossible Dreams 10

Episode 1

Powell and Donald Lamont stand outside the main offices of Lamont Energy.

"Now," Lamont says, "we shall have to be very careful.  There are many in this building who know me well and some who suspect the truth."  He reaches into a pocket and pulls out a pair of glasses, which he puts on.  "It is crucial that I maintain my guise as a mild mannered playboy."

"Um...  How can someone be a mild mannered playboy?" Powell asks.

"We face our most difficult hurdle immediately.  The receptionist, Doris Nader.  She has been in love with Coyote Man for years, but has only contempt for Donald Lamont.  And yet...  She often suspects that we are one and the same."

They walk into the building.  A middle aged woman sits, nibbling a bagel, behind a desk at the front of a long hallway.  When she notices them, her face lights up.  "Mr. Lamont!  What a surprise!  We haven't seen you here for months."

"Well, you know Doris...  I am an international jet setter.  A girl in every port and all..."

Doris laughs.  "You're such a kidder, Mr. Lamont!"  She looks at him.  "I didn't know you wore glasses.  They make you look very distinguished."

"I'm just an ordinary man, subject to the same physical frailties as anyone else..."  He picks up a folder from her desk.  "This looks interesting..."  He opens his hand and the folder falls to the ground, scattering papers over the carpet.  "Opps...  I'm so clumsy!"

"Oh...  Don't worry about it, I'll clean it up...  Are you all right, Mr. Lamont?"

"Of course, of course, never felt better.  In fact, I'm heading off to Europe tomorrow, for a golf tournament.  So if you hear of any interesting vigilante activity in the news, the next few days...  well, I'll be an ocean away, so I couldn't possibly be involved."  She stares at him.  "Anyway," he continues, "we have a busy day, and so must proceed.  Farewell Doris!"

"See you later, Mr. Lamont."

Lamont and Powell walk down the hallway.

"That woman is sharp as an axe," Lamont says.  "She's closer to the truth than I realized.  If only I could tell her...  But I want her to love me for myself, not for my heroic accomplishments."  He sighs.  "But for now...  We must prevent Captain Camouflage from launching the next two stages of his Illusion Ray Satellite.  We shall search these offices for evidence of his remaining hideouts."  He quickens his pace.

Powell follows him.  "Mild mannered playboy," he mumbles, shaking his head.
