Week 9 - Impossible Dreams, Prelude 2
Episode 1
“I am privileged to be held in confidence by the heroes!” Lamont cries. “But ordinary civilians should not possess the knowledge you have demonstrated.”
“Um… Mr. Lamont…” Powell says. “Um… I’m not sure if this is some sort of joke but…”
“It is no joke! If… If… If Spider-Man’s identity were to become known! Imagine the tragedy if some villain he had bested determined to avenge himself on poor Peter Parker’s sweet, elderly aunt! You must tell me what your intentions are! You must tell me how you learned what you know!”
“I… I… I just read it all in comic books! Just like you!”
Lamont stares at him. “You have access to the secret tales of the heroes? I thought only I had been so entrusted…” He considers this. After a few moments, his body relaxes. “Very well, Mr. Powell. Now I understand. You are of stout character and true heart! You have been granted the same privileges as I. You share my mission!” He waves at a pile of comic books. “We must guard the information in these documents that must not be revealed, but publicize that which it is safe for the public to know!”
“Mr. Lamont… are… are you telling me you think the stories in the comics are true?”
“Of course they are true! Our civilization… our very lives are jeopardized regularly by powerful evil doers and villains! Only the noble costumed champions stand between us and total destruction!”
“Um… Maybe… maybe I should go speak to your daughter…”
“Yes… Yes! I grow weary… I shall retire to refresh my strength.” He looks at Powell. “But Mr. Powell… I am very pleased we met! You and I are brothers. We share a trust that must never be betrayed. We must act toward the heroes as they act toward us. We must selflessly protect their secrets and their interests from all threats… Without question and without pause! No matter the challenge, no matter the cause!”
“Um…”
“Farewell, Mr. Powell! I shall rest now…” Lamont leaves.
Powell watches him walk through the door. Then he turns back to the comic books, his eyes wide.
