Week 6 - Frito Lay is a Fickle Mistress
Episode 4
Rantz talks with Shari Kern.
“Harry wants the new circulation plan on his desk first thing in the morning,” he says. “We might have to work late.”
“I don’t work late,” Shari says.
“Um… Ordinarily, that’s fine. I don’t like to either. But this is sort of an emergency.”
“I don’t work late.”
“Look… I understand where you’re coming from but sometimes things come up and you have to bend a little.”
“I know what happens to people who spend all night at the office. They forget about their real life and become all burnt out and hollow like you.”
“I’m not burnt out and hollow!”
“Well, that’s not gonna happen to me! I’ll think about this stuff during the day, but when five o’clock comes, I’m free…”
“I’m not burnt out and hollow! I read a lot… and listen to music…”
“I mean… I guess we could compromise… I know you guys won’t pay me time and a half in money… but maybe I could get time and a half in time…”
“I have a family I love to be with…”
“Like… If I work a half hour late tonight… I’ll come in forty five minutes later tomorrow morning to make up for it…”
“I think I’m very well rounded…”
“Or maybe not tomorrow… maybe I could just, sort of, keep track of it and take the time when I feel like it…”
“You know what? Forget it! I’ll figure out the circulation plan by myself…”
“That works too!” Shari gets up and leaves.
Rantz turns to his computer and stares at the monitor. After a few moments he looks out the window. “Burnt out and hollow…” he mumbles.
